Goodbye Reality Television. I Knew You TOO Well.

I am one of those people who watches a LOT of reality television. I’ve seen just about every reality TV show at least once and have recorded seasons and seasons of my favorite ones on my DVR to watch over and over again. You know all those Keeping Up With The Kardashians they show on E! and you’re like “Who keeps watching this?” – well, it’s me. I watch it shamefully, but I watch it.

Until now! I am officially purging my DVR of all the reality TV shows and have canceled their recording in the future. Hurrah me!

Ok, I’m sorry, that was a lie. I’m purging my DVR of almost all reality TV and have canceled most of the shows recoding in the future. I am allowing myself to indulge in reality TV that involves people having some sort of talent/competitive edge. So, I’m keeping Project Runway, The Voice, The Amazing Race, So You Think You Can Dance, and RuPaul’s Drag Race. BUT, I am getting rid of…

The Rachel Zoe Project and It’s A Brad Brad World (for the record, I never took sides in their falling out because oh yeah, I DON’T KNOW THEM)

Mob Wives (Too much drama, too much fighting, a lot less mob than you would think)

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, The Real Housewives of New York, The Real Housewives on New Jersey, (For me, it all started with Jersey…)

Vanderpump Rules (Honestly, I don’t even know why I watched this ever because, whaaaaattt???)

Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Any Kardashian anything, (This might be my most embarrassing one because….again….whaaaaaattt? The point? I can’t find it.)

And I can’t think of any more but I’m sure there were more and I’ve already forgotten about them since I deleted them and that really is a testament to their poor quality and lack of any valuable information.

Why am I doing this? Because of emotions y’all. Why in the world was I coming home after a difficult day at work getting yelled at, just to watch other people yell at each other? Negativity I don’t need ye! And I would often find myself feeling so angry/upset/confused by what I was watching that it just put me in an even worse mood than I already was in. What kind of sense does that make? Answer, none. So, I deleted them forever.

Adieu reality TV shows (some of you). Unfortunately, I knew you all too well.

  1. Oh my gosh…I could have written this. I might be able to one-up you on the trash factor though. One word: Jerseylicious. I don’t know why I do it but I can’t stop. Also I laughed out loud at your Vanderpump Rules line because I SOMEHOW found myself sitting in front of a marathon of that one weekend, and I really was like “whaaaat is happening to me right now……”

  2. Wow, you watched all those different Real Housewives shows and didn’t watch Atlanta?! That is the best one of the franchise, by far! Since you’re cutting out those others, you should add this one to your list.

    • I know! Everyone always tells me I should have watched Atlanta! I saw a few episodes but never got super involved, although if there was a marathon on, I definitely watched them all. 🙂

  3. Good for you! I think that’s great. I honestly don’t understand how people get on these shows to begin with and then think of it as a job… I just don’t get it. If reality shows start coming to show actual genuine reality of positive and inspiring experiences (which I guess would also just be called a documentary series) then I will start following them.

  4. Glad you’re keeping So You Think You Can Dance! It may move a bit slow at times with those darn commercials and such but that is what fast forward was invented for! So much talent and beauty and epicness to love!

  5. Goodness me! I find watching My Kitchen Rules four nights a week a HUGE commitment. So much so, in fact, that I was reluctant to start watching it in the first place.. but then the girls at work kept commenting on it and the ads kept giving it away, so I started to watch it. ThenI became hooked, and now it’s nearly the finals…. thank goodness! I love watching it but will be looking forward to my free time once it is over!!!!!

  6. I understand where your coming from. I stopped watching reality tv shows because honestly their useless and crappy. After watching season 4 of Basketball Wives I realised that I have to be more selective of what I watch. Now Series are my vices. Vampire Diaries anyone? Ian Somerholder any day,yes please..

    • Haha! Yeah, I’ve definitely done my time with series- Veronica Mars, Dawson’s Creek, The OC, all of those shows were my JAM back in the day.

  7. and I don’t have tv at all for good few years now and don’t miss it at all
but even when I did have it the reality shows? SERIOUSLY?
for me simply boring and I wouldn’t waste my time on it
I’d rather read, talk to friends, watch good movie or good series
watching reality shows is like watching your neighbours VERY CLOSE, why on earth would I do that?? my own life is interesting enough :p
but I know quite a few people that find reality shows and soap operas relaxing and good for them if it really is 🙂

  8. this is why i dont even have cable or dish. there is practically nothing on so itl just a waste of money and time. we have mountains of dvds but thats about it… ps i dont know why my phone wont let me use proper grammar. its embarassing…
